Technical Textiles: The Unknown Half of the Textile Industry

‎Regularly, our Secretary General Lutz Walter shares his insights and knowledge through his blogposts, covering a wide range of topics related to textile sustainability and innovation. Follow his blog to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges that the textile industry is facing today.

"Since most technical textiles have to fulfil highly technical functions based on material characteristics such a high tenacity, high strength-to-weight ratios, durability, UV or chemical stability, abrasion resistance (etc.), the fibre materials of choice are generally fossil carbon or mineral based man-made fibres. All technical textile and nonwoven end markets combined today consume a higher share of almost all petrol-based synthetics (...) It is often astonishing to me how little this fact is known to even experts concerned with textile material growth, footprint and circularity, including researchers and policy makers"

In his latest blog post, our Secretary General Lutz Walter explores the diverse applications of textile materials across various sectors, highlighting their indispensable role in daily life and industries. From automotive to medical, construction to defence, Lutz emphasises the extensive use of technical textiles, urging to recognise their significance and the imperative for sustainable innovation in textile production and usage.
