The SmartX Innovation Hub discovers the Catalan high-performance and smart textile ecosystem

On 12-13 November 2024, Textile ETP, in collaboration with Textils.CAT, hosted a two-day event in Barcelona, Spain. Project Manager Judith Bosch, and Communications Officer Matteo Mainiero, alongside members of the SmartX Innovation Hub, immersed themselves in the region’s advanced textile landscape, connecting with industry leaders and exploring pioneering developments.

Day 1: Company Visits and Technological Insights

The first day began with a visit to Antex's headquarters in Anglès, Girona. As a leading textile group specialising in the production of synthetic yarns, Antex provided attendees were introduced to the company’s history and sustainable product innovations through a presentation, followed by a factory tour showcasing their production processes.

The group then visited Sensing Tex, where their showroom, displaying stretchable electronics, gave participants a chance to explore prototypes designed for medical monitoring, such as pressure-sensing mats, and learn about advanced techniques like printing inks to create circuit boards on large stretchable substrates. This cost-effective technology enables greater flexibility in design and device options, demonstrating the potential of smart textiles.

Day 2: Catalan Ecosystem and Collaborative Workshops

The second day began with an overview of the Catalan textile ecosystem, presented by Textils.CAT. Judith Bosch then introduced the SmartX Innovation Hub, emphasising its role in fostering collaboration and innovation in the textile industry.

Next, Enrico Maset, Business Performance Advisor, shared insights into the latest trends and advancements in technical textiles, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the key innovations shaping the sector.

Attendees then participated in a collaborative workshop led by Textils.CAT and Enrico Maset. Divided into groups, participants engaged in defining synergies and strategies to navigate the future of technical textiles. The event concluded with an interactive networking session, allowing attendees to connect one-to-one with industry professionals, exchanging ideas and fostering new partnerships.

This event offered a unique opportunity to explore Catalonia’s thriving textile ecosystem. Through hands-on experiences and meaningful discussions, participants gained valuable insights into sustainable practices, innovative technologies, and collaborative opportunities shaping the future of the textile industry.
