The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) concept for innovation in chemicals, materials, processes and products is a challenging framework to adopt given the complexity involved in assessing and managing environmental, human health and social impacts of an innovation introduced in an industrial value chain or end market. But a complex concept may still be better than no concept at all.
What the 20 IRISS project partners, under leadership of IVL, try to achieve is to explore how SSbD could be applied in different material value chains, how it can complement safety and sustainability processes that companies already use and how it can be simplified to make it useful even for smaller companies.
